Warren Buffett Is An Equal Opportunity Genocide Supporter
We're speaking, of course, about the Sudanese and salmon, and Buffett's complacency-nay, his investment in-their death (or at least David Weidner at Market Watch is). Sure, he's pledged to give away all his money when he dies, and he's the man who brought us the Cavemen, but underneath all that loving beats a heart made of pure stone and evil. Last week, Berkshire Hathaway shareholders voted against a resolution to reverse the actions of PacifiCorp, a Berkshire subsidiary, that is apparently endangering the salmon population (and lowering the water quality) in the Northwest.
And the buck does not stop with the fish. Buffett's acolytes also shot down a call to sell Berkshire's $3.3 billion stake in PetroChina (based in Beijing). According to Weidner, the PC(U) subsidiary in the Sudan pays the government for the right to produce oil there, and those payments "support the Sudanese government and its military efforts."
Despite being told by shareholder Judith Porter that selling Berkshire's stake "will send a signal to China and to the Sudan that there are costs for continuing this destruction," Buffett backed the investment, arguing that it has nothing to do with what's going on, and that it's the Chinese government condoning the action in Darfur.
Says Weidner of the development: "Hey, if you could make a few bucks dealing with someone you know is helping hide a serial killer, why say anything? It probably wouldn't help, right?" Well no one's going to say yes to that.
Remind us never to introduce Weidner to our friend Grizzley bear. (And Dan Loeb).

Who gives a shit about the Sudan? Africa is already way too overpopulated. The salmon population and clean water are much more important.

This is the classic conundrum that vexes eco-promoter hippies like WWF or Greenpeace. People only care about, and hence donate to cause that save "cute" animals. Baby seals, pandas, shit like that.
Salmon are slimy, cold blooded, and don't like to cuddle. And the sudanese, well, you don't see Angelina Jolie adopted their urchins, do you?
Buffett doesn't care if there's no smoked salmon on our bagels in ten years, he's not going to be here.

Sorry about all the typos. I've had a llllot of coffee today.
Maybe I could get Carney to proofread for me.

Zbignew, salmon don't like to cuddle? Tell that to Brian Hunter. He can't seem to get enough salmon snuggling action.

Americans can't shut up about the Sudan. Everywhere you turn, it's Darfur this, Darfur that. It's the latest craze. White Americans like to demonstrate what they like to think is their moral superiority, by sympathizing with black people. That's why they import hundreds of thousands of East African so-called "refugees" to these shores, and that's why celebrities adopt little black babies.

If PetroChina sends profits to BRK, the profits don't go to Chinese government.
If American consumer buys products Made in China (they are ubiquitous!), the China's government gets credited with tax income.
Looks like most American consumers support Sudan genocide, while BRK opposes it.

If Buffett is Jewish, he will npt be attacked like this. I assume Buffett is not a Jew, any one can confirm this?
Posted by: steve | May 15, 2007 09:50 PM
He is not. Actually him not being Jewish is precisely why he did not become a banker. I think it was Goldman or a now-defunct Jewish bank, but anyways they wouldn't hire because back then if you were a gentile you'd work for Morgan or another WASP bank and so he set out on his own. It wasn't racist per se - just a mutually agreed upon segregation between rich Jews and rich WASPs in banking.

Thanks, BSD, for confirming this. I am just thinking a person like Warren buffett who donates majority of his money to gates fundation should be attacked so viciously like this. there must be something going on btwn him and his attackers. David Weidner sounds Jewish, so are the media here. That is where my suspicion came from, not being racist.

Warren Buffett's decision on Petrochina was an investment decision not a political decision. Mixing investment and political decisions is not generally a good idea if your job is investment. Of course, there are cases where mixing does occur and sometimes it is a good thing but it isn't a good idea to cast personal attacks at a great investor. If investment decisions were always politicized, I doubt the world would be better off. There may be other ways of improving the situation in Darfur than divesting Petrochina. Many investment groups have in fact agreed to divest so a message has been sent and there is no guarantee that further divestment will have any impact on this. Pushing too hard would mean China could just take some of its money out of US bonds and invest in Petrochina to make up any difference.

Bess, just wondering if anyone on your end has at all done their homework on the Klamath dams and the river? We live here and we can prove that the dams, and the algae are not and have not killed the Salmon, just seems that our side of the story is never written, must not sell papers? I suppose slamming on Buffet does tho. This is why the residents of No. Ca. and Siskiyou Co. don't let our paper write about the Tribes/enviromentalists and all the lies they are feeding the press. We only ask that someone do some homework, print facts, and ask the ones who live there whats up. Seems fair doesn't it?
