Overstock CEO Admits To Anonymous Message Board Posts

patrickbyrne.jpgAlthough Gary Weiss has been on to him months, Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne admitted to “pulling a Mackey” last night, writing on the Overstock website that, like Whole Foods CEO John “Rahodeb” Mackey, he posted on company-related message boards pseudonymously.

Byrne’s admission comes in response to this New York Times article, where he told reporters that unlike Mackey, “he never hides his true identity and always signs his name when he posts under his online handle, ‘Hannibal.’” But it appears that Byrne has occasionally let the sobriquet stand alone. Last night, Byrne wrote in an open letter to Times reporter Brad Stone,

Please provide a citation for this claim: "Mr. Byrne said that he never hides his true identity and always signs his name when he posts under his online handle, 'Hannibal'". Is it your claim that I used the words "always" and "never" in some message board post (and if so, please cite that post), or is it your claim that I stated this in our interview? I know for a fact that the claim is false as regards our interview, and believe it to be false with regard to any online posting, but I stand ready to be corrected.

Just how prevalent is this anonymous executive posting phenomena? If you frequent these boards, please share every suspicious nom de plum you come across. Be particularly wary of anagrammed names of an executive’s mother, sister, wife or daughter, famous military commanders and Republican presidents.

During my time at a popular, but now defunct online broker, we once caught a client service rep on a popular message board, defending himself to an attacker about the client service he received. Our compliance office trolled those board religously looking for both customer complaints, and also employees postings. This kid in question, hung on to his job by the skin of his teeth and he was just an entry-level employee, who STILL knew better then to engage people on message boards.

It's truly mindboggling that a CEO even cares what's on there, let alone feels the need to defend themselves/the company. I can't tell if it's arrogance, stupidity or just a huge combination of both.

when you see something criticizing your decisions and actions or those of the company you've poured your blood, sweat, and tears into you tend to take it personally I'd assume.

that combined with the (at least perception of) annonymity and distance posting on msg boards and blogs affords helps the poster/executive/compliance nightmare rationalize their border-line indiscretions

This should come as a shock to everyone that P O'Byrne would do something like this.

It's not worth arguing with him. After all he has a photographic memory.

Being batshit crazy doesn't hurt either.

No doubt this guy is:
a. out of his mind,
b. an incompetent and irresponsible manager, c. The longest tenured executive with such a high psychosis quotent
d. bored, seriously how the f&ck does this dbag get away with wasting roughly 90% of his time and shareholders' money over the past 2+ years with his conspiracy theory bullsh!t and stock-blogging?

My bad for trying to offer up some sort of weak rationale, theres no excuse at all (well, besides the board being completely in absentia)
