Vote Or Die

So some banks are so poor now that they can't even afford to pay for your Blackberrys and there's a chance RIM might even go out of business as a result and I feel for you, I really do, but you know how it is...not so bad for DealBreaker, not so bad for Bess. What I'm getting at is that our publisher has decided I need to be able to check in with the tips line more frequently because you never know when Citigroup's going to announce a 350 billion dollar writedown or Jim'll want to get high and he (our publisher, but Jim, too) just really feels that I need to be accessible at all times in more ways than currently offered by my Razr. (This whole thing actually would've been a lot more satisfying if it had played out more like "Hey, Bessiecakes,* a busy and important person like you needs a wireless handheld device that allows you to check your e-mail and browse the Web for unique and interesting Craigslist postings (FOR THE PURPOSES WRITE-OFFS) whenever/wherever" than "Can I have a Blackberry?" "Yeah, sure," but whatever, I don't care. I really don't.)

Only thing is, I can't decide which one to get. (Obviously I've ruled out a Sidekick, because I'm neither a 14 year-old girl nor a 'mo of any age (not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just not) and the Treo, because (in my mind only) I'm not a loser). You people know Blackberrys and you've made it this far (down the post) anyway, so I just thought, how about a poll? And here we are. I have a few notes, which aren't intended to inform your pick, just things to keep in mind: The Curve strikes me as very soccer mom, but I don't know, maybe I should run with that? I like the weight of the 8700, but prefer the look of the 8800 (in black). I've more or less rejected the Pearl out of hand because it's called the Pearl but I'm trying to step outside my comfort zone in all aspects of life and one might say that this would be a good place to start (though I'm asking as a friend: please don't). I'm not going to include the 7130 because I know some people won't be able to help themselves from voting for it simply because I think it's a hideous eyesore and wouldn't that be hilarious. But if there's anyone out there with strong feelings for the model, please share. Alright, so you pick one for me now, and later, we'll help Carney decide which finish he should use for his head shots (I say matte, he's holding out for high gloss).

*in this scenario Keith, who's the only one who calls me that, still works at DB.

And as a thank-you for your participation, I give you: George Shea.

Get an iPhone. Same e-mail capacity, better web browsing, and it's just plain cooler.

2

Posted by Anon, Nov 27, 2007 11:39AM

I agree an iPhone is the way to go

3

the iPhone's too nerdy for her.

4

While at it, any chance you guys will have mobile version of dealbreaker anytime soon? I'm using a Treo (gasp!), and all the ads make this shit look out of whack.

5

Posted by , Nov 27, 2007 11:45AM

a Treo or Curve imo

6

Posted by girl, Nov 27, 2007 11:48AM

absolutely love the pearl- and it fits in an evening clutch which is obviously key

8830 - It's the 8800 with Wifi. Or an iPhone. They're badass.

8

Posted by , Nov 27, 2007 11:50AM

I have an iPhone and a Blackberry 8800. They're different devices. The iPhone is awesome but it's useless for business email. But obviously the web browsing and design are much better, so your call.

Hilarious that BofA is cutting back on Blackberrys and computers. As if junior people there didn't already lose hours a day to problems caused by the used 2002 model Dells they've got everybody on.

It depends, are you looking for a phone replacement or a mini-computer.

If you're going to want to replace your cellphone with something you can tug around all day whether in your pocket or in a bag, then go with the Pearl.

If it's just for work and you plan on also having a personal cell phone (and you don't plan on bringing it out on your models & bottles nights), then go with the 8800.

If you want the mix between the two, go with the Curve.

16

Posted by JY, Nov 27, 2007 12:09PM

Bess, you should get an IPhone. If I remember correctly, it works with Gmail and that's probably all the e-mail you want to check anyway.

12:07 yes, and now a blackberry to boot?

i have NEVER gotten to pick my own blackberry, even after working at a succession of investment banks and a couple of hedge funds.

i may have to consider a career in mockery instead of finance

Bess, the 8800 has awesome vibrating. A mobile device would not be the strangest thing that has been in your twat.

12:33 i had to google what the hell you are talking about, you really are up on your new york city gay culture aren't you?

29

Posted by L'Emmerdeur, Nov 27, 2007 12:55PM

Dealbreaker: where even Blackberry discussions de-evolve into mildly homophobic gay rants.

Bess: 8800. Unless you have really really tiny fingers, the Curve keyboard might be too small. Also, guys at my office with the Curve complain it is sluggish, whereas the 8800 interface is not.

I moved from a treo to the 8800 because it was sluggish and unstable. this thing just works. Also: the 8800 has no camera, in case you ever have to go somewhere where cameraphones are verboten. the Curve includes one.

Posted by Mr. M, Nov 27, 2007 1:07PM

Blackberry Curve is the way to go.

Really awesome, and way easier to type on than an iPhone.

31

Posted by pierre, Nov 27, 2007 1:15PM

why don't these homos just call their bars "Hershey Highway"?

32

Posted by , Nov 27, 2007 1:33PM

You should take a look at the iPaqs too. I think they offer nice functionality.

If not, 8800 is the way to go.

33

Posted by TheUnrepentantGunner, Nov 27, 2007 1:54PM

Definitely the i-phone. Cliff Mason said it gave him a social life.

Peirre baby, how about I call your mom "Old Lady Beggin' to ride my joystick"

35

Posted by , Nov 27, 2007 2:12PM

Anon 12:43 cause, like a decent number of the guys sitting around you, im gay. Which is generally not a problem and can in fact be funny at times. You know Wall St boys hate to loose. They hate even more when the boy they loose to is gay, which is hilarious to witness. You want to just give them your hankie.

NOT an iphone. come on, people. I have an iphone. It's great. but if you need email access, a blackberry is a hundred billion zillion times better. the iphone email application is great if you get 10 emails a day. if you get 1000, it's pure agony.

(in fact I got rid of my blackberry so I would stop reading email all the freakin time. With the iphone, it's just too painful to do more than one or twice a day.)

37

Posted by , Nov 27, 2007 2:20PM

pearl is nice, understated, more workable as a phone, less to carry around, not looking like I'm compensating, y'know?

where are all you cutiepies? 4:00PM. 14th floor men's room. Bear. Since no one at Bear can actually read this, we'll have all the other nearby banks - JPM, C, Barclays.

I'm in the brown loafers. Stall on the left. Bring lube, pitchbooks and a red pen.

The Baby Bears are a bunch of cheap asses. They expect you to pick up the check at Bobby Vann's and they never swallow. Every wonder why Papa Bear Cayne keeps a spittoon under his desk?

42

Posted by Vibrations, Nov 27, 2007 2:52PM

I found the vibrations on the old 6200 models much stronger than the new ones.

43

L. Craig, the 14th floor is so last month. Meet me on the 7th floor and we can give that haggard looking broad in client services some protein fortified eye cream.

44

I switched to the pearl from an 8800 and the big difference I've noticed is that the pearl is much smaller and easier to carry around. I think the new pearl 2 and the curve both come with GPS which is nice. I'm a guy with pudgy sausage-esque fingers and the pearl's keypad is no problem for me.

45

Posted by Merkin, Nov 27, 2007 3:05PM

50

Instead of spending money on a Blackberry for Bess, DB should spend money on making this website functional ... I can't even load half the pages here right now, it just sits there saying "Loading" ... looks like the servers are overloaded, but whatever the cause this is the ONLY website I've seen since 1997 that behaves like this.

51

Why does this place have to be such a lame homophobic pit sometimes? You can't buy a sidekick because you're not a homo, Bess? Obnoxious.

I love my Pearl, Bess.

But, hey, that's just me.

And RIM has fought the good fight on some important IP litigation, so I figure freethinkers owe them some consideration. So, to those of you who say "iPhone," take your backdated stock options with you on a long walk off a short pier.
