As a former wrestler (wrassler for you old timers), I can tell you that the hair was a big advantage for ol John. Dude probably put a little "product" in and before you know it, your hands are covered in nasty ass, slippery pomade.

The real question is this, was he aggressive enough to check the oil when he had to?
